This answer is from After our collections are paid, how long till it is updated in the 3 credit agencies?
It is safe to give 30 days for an update to your credit files. It is important to note that paying down/off your debts new and old is important but when it comes to collection debt it may have little impact to your score. Even when updated as "paid in full" once collections are reported they don't fall off for 7 years from when they were reported or became negative. Any lender reviewing your credit will see the collections and it could impact their decision. If the collections was reported in error or due to improper medical billing, dispute it and see if it can be removed. Some collection agencies will negotiate removing negative history if you pay the debt. It doesn't hurt to ask. Once you file a dispute the the credit agencies, they have 30 days to validate or update the claim or it has to be removed from your credit all together. It doesn't hurt to dispute ANYTHING that you question. If you file the claim online you will get an email with any updates and adjustments.
