Call Allstate and ask them -- I think it will have to do with the way your policy is written.

I never had renter's insurance in college -- I basically owned a thousand dollars' worth of electronic equipment and a couple of sweaters -- but colleges now are encouraging their students to buy it to protect computers, iPods, etc.

Columbia University's website lists two companies that claim to focus particularly on students. With the caveat that I've never used either, check out

http://www.tc.columbia.edu/housing/policies.asp?id=Renters%27+Insurance&pol=stud

which has links to National Student Services and CSI Insurance Agency.

Don't forget to ask about jewelry coverage -- if you're sending your daughter off with grandma's heirloom ring, realize that jewelry coverage is usually a separate rider -- and also take the time to look at your health insurance -- again, depending on the policy, your daughter might stay covered for a while.
