Hi, my name is Colin. I'm interning at FiLife this summer, and thought I'd chime in to help you out.

To answer your question, yes, you are more likely to get a loan now that your mother has cosigned. Depending on both her credit and yours, this is usually the best and easiest way to get a private loan. Why? Because if for some reason you don’t make good on your loan payments, your bank trusts that your cosigner will.

Good credit can only help you. Since a private loan is just like a regular bank loan, it’s essential that you stay on top of payments and build a good credit score. This can only open the doors for future prospects.

If you don't get approved, don't sweat it, you have plenty of other options. Either shop around with other private lenders, or consider FAFSA (The Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This is a one stop shop for Federal Student Loans, and is simple to apply for. Check out www.fafsa.com for more details.

I hope this was helpful! Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns!

estles28, Colin is correct that you should be in a more favorable position this time.

If you are declined, do pay careful attention to the reasons you are given for the decline. If the reason refers to a credit blemish, make sure to check your reports ( annualcreditreport.com will let you check each report for free), and dispute any information that is inaccurate. If you avoid any credit blemishes in the future, your credit score will gradually increase and getting loans on your own accord will be easier,

Best of luck with the loan and with school!
