How long do I have to request 529 withdraw of funds after payment is made to university?

I have a fund for my son that attends a private univerisity (4th yr coming up). He will not complete in 4 yrs and not sure if he will go for an MBA. The funds I have are $25k and do not cover one full year. To date I have been able to pay cash as we go after his partial scholarship, and some prepaid tuition. However, not knowing what my son will do or how the economy will effect us (jobs) , I would like to continue paying as I go while I can and then withdraw the funds later or transfer to my daughter if needed.. Thus, the reason for my question is will I be able to request funds withdrawal on a future date (2010) that cover prior year invoices t(uition and room / board) payments I have made (2006 - 2009) payments... One customer service rep told me I could only request distribution of funds that relate to the current education year costs.

Qualified distributions from 529 college savings plans are excluded from gross income and hence tax-free. For a distribution to be qualified, it must be taken in the same tax year as the qualified education expenses. Otherwise it is not considered as having paid for those expenses.
