HUD is an acronym for the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development: http://www.hud.gov/buying/comq.cfm

HUD takes ownership of homes with mortgages insured by HUD that were foreclosed. HUD claims that there are some good deals out there; you can learn more about buying a HUD home here: http://www.hud.gov/offices/hsg/sfh/reo/reobuyfaq.cfm
