First, it's a by-invitation-only card. You have to show high income and an unusually large charge history with Amex to qualify.

It also charges a four-figure annual fee. In return for paying that fee, cardholders get all kinds of special perks and royal treatment.

So basically the Black card combines exclusivity, high cost, and unusual benefits into a high-status package.
