One of the largest insurance companies in the world, New York City-based AIG – American International Group – offers numerous insurance and financial services through its several subsidiaries. Units include AIG SunAmerica, AIG American General, ownership in 21st Century insurance as well as reinsurance operations, real estate, aviation leasing and investment products.

In September 2008, AIG was given an $85 billion line of credit from the U.S. government and required to sell off units in order to pay down the line.
