Billing itself as the "Bank of Opportunity," Charlotte based Bank of America strives to live up to that promise. With 5,000 locations and numerous ATM's in 35 states, Bank of America is the closest thing to a national bank that exists today. It offers online banking nationwide, including brokerage and private banking through U.S. Trust. With the ability to lend in all 50 states, through credit cards, mortgages and home equity loans, Bank of America can reach anyone througout the United States.
In mid-2008 Bank of America acquired Countrywide Financial in a stock deal. Countrywide now operates as a subsidiary of Bank of America Corporation under the title "Bank of America Home Loans".

My husband and I have been customers of bank of america for 10 years or more. They have charged $35, for a $1.00 transaction. which is crazy; this is Loan Sharking at its worst. They no longer pay transactions as they are made. They now move the transactions around so they'll cause several overdrafts. This is theft! They are robbing us!
Not only do they purposely cause us overdraft fees, they are charging $10 per day on top of that until you pay the overdraft charges they caused. This is Robbery, which is suppose to be against the law. This is very poor business; when a bank robs its own customers, knows they're dissatisfied & continues its practices. I had a mortgage and a HELOC with Countrywide. Their customer service was a nightmare. First you had to hold a long time to reach a rep. When you did the first rep never solved the problem. It took many calls to resolve issues such as closing a HELOC, adjusting the escrow amount, and even paying my property tax out of escrow. Fortunately I have refinanced and will never deal with Countrywide again.
I have been a member of the BofA family since 1980. I have three savings, one checking and 2 ira accounts that within time they will be CLOSED. 4/9/08 I called to check the rate one of my Ira accounts had and which account I could deposit to and did so with the representative over the phone because she said it would be "easy" ! Yeah, now we're in 2009 and I received a notice from the IRS because "easy" never was done correctly. The IRS received a Trust transfer and not a form 5498 that is required. On April 8, 2009 I went into a Branch for help, was told it would take 10-20 business days to correct. Called on 4/20/09 to make sure it was in the works and was told it would be done by April 29th. On May 12th I called and was told it was done on May 4th and a copy went out a week after. THIS MORNING I CALLED 6/2/09 AND WAS TOLD IT WAS DONE LAST WEEK. I AM READY TO PULL OUT MY HAIR. IN THE MEANTIME THE IRS IS SENDING NOTICES REQUESTING $1300. NICE. I am totally bummed out, I used to go on and on about how B of A was soo good. My husband is a Wells Fargo customer, I guess I will be too. I didn't want to enter a star but had to .
I have tp say, that I have NO problems with BOA. I have my mortgage, checking account and a major Visa CC with them (Started out as a secured, then converted to a WorldPoints after 9 months and I was the one who called). I have been a customer since April 2008. The issues I did have were pretty much resolved with a phone call. I pretty much don't have to deal with people anymore thanks to BOA. Bank deposits I do through the ATM (checks and cash). I pay all my bills from BOA's bill pay, and contrary to what I read here, I pretty much get an accurate amount of my bank's balance. I haven't overdrawn on an account in over 2 years (when I was with Sovereign Bank). The only time an Overdrawn was done was when one of my payee's cashed a draft earlier than the day they were supposed to. Bank of America then charged me $35. However a quick phone call got that problem resolved as Bank of America admited it was their fault. As someone who used to overdraft a lot in my youth, I can sympathize with those who do currently. Because of that, I say to you that while you may hate the bank, accept some responsibility also if YOU KNOW you were wrong.
The reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because I hate their Add-It-Up service. You buy something through their website and use a BOA card or Debit card and then have to wait several weeks (sometimes months) for them to give you the few bucks in your account. They advertise the service like they're gonna do it immediately, but they don't. Then when you call and complain, the high school dropout who answers the phone says that customers love the service as is. Now I'm not exactly hard up on the 5-80 bucks I tend to get back, but don't make it sound like I will see an immediate rebate either.
Overall, Bank of America helped a guy like me rebuild his credit. They weren't the only ones, but they were a big help. I am hoping to use them for my next auto loan at the earliest opportunity.
I only gave them one star because I couldn't give them ZERO!
Bank of America is one of the worst banks around. I was a customer of theirs for 3+ years and from day one I was treated like my money was no good. They have absolutely no respect for any of their customers and will look for any way possible to charge you.
My final experience with them was when I was charged an overdraft fee of $35 for a payment that was still PENDING and an available balance of over $1,000 in my checking. They couldn't give me a good reason why and when I explained to them that I had been a customer of theirs for quiet a while and had never disputed a charge and if this was not taken care of I would not only be changing banks but putting a bad review of them anywhere I could and advising my family to switch banks... the supervisor's respone "We're sorry to lose you but it's a lose-lose situation."
I have switched to regions and the customer service is a million times better, people in the bank know you by name and treat you with the upmost respect and kindness. But most of all there are no outrageous charges-- probably because they aren't being threatened with going under...
I opened a checking account with Bank of America nine years ago and never had any major problems until now. I went into the bank to cash my tax refund check and asked the teller if he could open a savings account for me, he said no problem. I was impre-ssed with the convenience of not having to wait to be called and be seated at one their desk. Well now I wish I had waited because the teller cashed my check but did not open my savings account. I asked him to put 300 hundred in my checking account and 300 hundred into a savings account . When I went to the atm to check-my savings account it did not exist! Where is my 300 hundred doll-ars? I was not given a deposit slip or reciept nor did I sign anythi ng. I trusted the teller to help me and he claims he gave me the 300 hundred dollars. Well he did not, I will never trust Bank of America again. I will close my CHECKING ACCOUNT SOON!!!
BofA did pay quite a bit more interest on a large CD that will soon mature, but that's because the bank isn't perceived to be as safe as Wells Fargo.
I think BofA is OK, but Wells is a better bank. I think Kenneth Lewis really blew it by overpaying for the mess that was Merrill Lynch. BIG MISTAKE!
