This review is from Bank of America
Alright, so I'm a college student and I've been with Bank of America for nearly three years now. The experiences that I have had with this bank have been nothing short of satisfactory. Not once have I walked out of this bank disappointed. This review is gonna be a LONG read. You might want to grab your reading glasses and possible a bag of popcorn or something.
Through my early years of high school, before banking with BoA, I was with a local bank and had nothing but constant troubles with them. For transactions that I made, the funds would be taken out of my account, be randomly placed back in, and taken out again. For example, lets say I have $85 in my checking account. I made a debit card purchase at Finish Line for $80, the funds would be taken out and I would confirm the balance at an ATM. One week later, I would check my balance again and have an unexpected $80 in my account. I visit the bank to see what's going on and they tell me "It's a depository from Finish Line, that's all I know, it's in your account, it's your money, spend it as you like."
Being a high school student that knew very little about banking, I was still confused and hesitant. So for the next few days, I make VERY small transactions on food and candy: $0.50, $0.99, $1.50, $0.49, etc. Roughly about 15 transactions. Later in the week, I check my balance expecting it to be around $60 and see that my balance is at a whopping -$214. I visit the bank the next day and they tell me that there NEVER was a depository made from Finish Line. They said that I willingly slipped into overdraft on my own and charged me $34.50 for each transaction that went into the negative. OVERDRAFT?! What the hell is that?! I'm a freaking high school student, how was I supposed to know anything about that?! I was never warned about this when opening my account and they don't teach us things like this in school! On top of that, all of my transactions had not fully processed, so by the end of the week, my balance would be a whopping -$462.
I begged them from the bottom of my heart to help me out and cover some of these charges. They did nothing. They covered no charges. Not $100, not $50, not even $20. They left me to pay the fees on my own. I was at rock-bottom and truly infuriated, but I accepted responsibility. I made the damage, so I had to fix it. If they weren't going to help me, then so be it. Thankfully, I had a great paying job at Circuit City at the time. I waited two weeks for payday to roll around. After school, I visited the bank to see if my direct deposit had hit. I ask the teller for my balance, she checks the balance, takes a sticky note and writes "$1.09" on it. I take a look at the note and say "Oh sweet, awesome. So can you give me my dollar and close my account?" She does not say a word, she clicks the mouse a few times, makes a few keystrokes, places $1.09 on the counter, and prints a confirmation page that the account was closed. The entire time other tellers are looking at her and are wondering what's going on. I take the dollar and the confirmation page and tell her to "keep the change." I leave that bank with a smile on my face, knowing that I will never have anything to do with them ever again.
