I wish there was less than one star. I really do. My loans go through Great Lakes. I needed some information, called them, and they faxed it to me within five minutes. Same information needed from Nelnet by my wife? Takes them five business days and we've been on the phone all day just to hear that the ONE department that can handle this closed two hours ago. So it'll be a week. The main issue is that my wife is 8.5 months pregnant, we're trying to buy a house, and all we're waiting on is ONE piece of paper from the these idiots. Essentially, we're going to be homeless because these people don't know what they're doing. STAY AWAY!

I don't know what else to say about Nelnet. I have been dumbfounded over the past two months as I have tried to pay back my loans. The online payment system is the absolute worst and it wasn't working for the better part of July and August. The phone technicians are clueless to the point that I don't even know how to explain my problems to them anymore. I've written weekly emails but have received no reply. Tonight, for the first time, I went online and did a search for "problems with Nelnet" and was amazed (but slightly relieved) to find so many other forums full of people with the same problems I have had. I could try to explain the mistakes Nelnet has made with my account, but I really can't even do it justice here.
What is the next course of action in a situation like this? People have mentioned the Better Business Bureau and the State Attorney General's office. Where do I begin? What should I do?

has anyone else found errors on their August 18, 2009 Nelnet statement?
yesterday while reconciling mine, i discovered the dates for the Total Principal Paid, Total Interest Paid, and Total Amount Paid is shown as 7/18/09 but in fact the amounts associated with those categories actually includes everything I paid up through and including a very large payment I made on 8/18/09. my payment was "effective" or applied before the 8/18/09 statement printed.
also, they are showing an amount for Current Accrued Interest, but it should be zero. the substantial payment I made on 8/18/09 -- again before the 8/18/09 statement was generated -- paid all of the accrued interest thus reducing it to zero. the payment also substantially reduced the principal. all told, my loans are paid several months in advance, but each month i make multiple extra monthly payments so i can pay it off early. i fully realize that interest still accrues on the principal on a daily basis despite having made numerous extra payments. (i'm an accountant so i know how it works.)
further, my 7/18/09 statement provided details on my Group A and Group B loans -- one group is subsidized and the other isn't. when my 8/18/09 statement was printed, it only lists Group A loans. my Group B loans aren't separately listed like they were on the 7/18/09 statement. instead, all of the totals beneath the "Group A" heading on the 8/18/09 statement actually includes the loan figures for both Group A and Group B.
for a few years now, i have diligently tracked my weekly progress to eliminate these loans. they were consolidated a few years back, so that shouldn't be causing the issue, and i have standard payments -- not income sensitive, etc.
has anyone else experienced anything like this?
Nelnet has become a joke. i have yet to find customer service to be informed and helpful, rather they seem incompetent.
with the help of my dad who is an attorney and who work's in the state attorney general's office, i'm ready to pursue legal remedies. i've had enough of Nelnet's perpetual nonsense.

Nelnet is fine if you plan on paying only the statement payment. If you plan on applying an over-payment to principal...good luck. I have been frustrated at their attempts to apply the over-payment to the interest even after I have jumped through their hoops to apply an overages to principal. I have not been able to have them correct the problems.
Nelnet does nothing but SCAM you! I made 30 consecutive, EFT monthly payments, signed up for their email and email correspondence and now they won't reduce my rate to 3.33% as promised! I did everything they instructed me to do in order to receive the lower interest rate. And NOW they tell me that I didn't sign up for their e-correspondence and I am no longer eligible for the lower interest rate. I DID sign up for their e-correspondence, but I am still getting screwed! I am reporting them to the BBB and anyone else that will listen or possibly help. Do a search - you'll find many other complaints about Nelnet - exact same complaint as mine! They are nothing but SCAM ARTISTS!!!

While I was paying on my student loan Nelnet wasn't too bad, they made some changes to their autopay program that were a little frustrating, but nothing to major. I am now back in school and completed the hoop jumping to get my deferment paperwork from my school and submit it to Nelnet. I received my letter stating my deferment had been accepted but that I would have to go online to terminate my automatic drafts. I did this and 4 different time it came up saying that I could not cancel my automatic draft online that I would have to call their office. I called their office at the beginning of May spoke to a male customer service rep who explained that because I was enrolled in Nelnet Pay instead of their Kwikpay program that he would have to be the one to terminate my automatic drafts. No problem, we went through my account and told me he had terminated it. Now one month later I get an email stating they have withdrawn my payment from my bank account. When I called Nelnet I was told that the person I had spoke had canceled part of my payment, but according to his notes the rep had given me instructions on how to terminate the remaining draft online. For one, the whole reason why I called them in May was because it would not let me terminate my payment online. Second, I did not go through the hoop jumping to get a deferment just to continue to make my payments while I was in school. I was told that there was nothing they could do because their records said I was told to terminate the payment online. WHY WOULD I CALL THEM ABOUT NOT BEING ABLE TO TERMINATE MY AUTO PAY ONLINE IF I COULD TERMINATE IT ONLINE!!!!!! I am definitely looking at my options to change student loan providers back to Sallie Mae or someone more competent. I am not pleased at all with the lack of competency at Nelnet.

Terrible company-Do not do business with them!!!! They will lie to you and will not return phone calls or emails once you try to contact them. Will report them to the BBB and State Attorney's Office (FL) for accepting a check that I signed over to them and they applied the whole amount towards the principal, when in fact I sent them a letter requesting to spread out my payments over a short period of months. THEY HAVE DONE THIS IN THE PAST FOUR YEARS! I requested the check back and told Ben Inbody, poor customer skills, that I would send it back to the State of Florida Financial Aid Office since their company could not do this. He said he could not...Florida teachers and aids are loosing jobs right now and I told B. Inbody that what his company did was illegal by not notifying me, the customer, that their company could no longer spread out payments with a forgiveness pymt. I did not want the money applied toward the principal...Again, TEACHERS ARE LOOSING THEIR JOBS IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA-NELNET WILL RETURN THE MONEY BACK TO THE STATE AND I WILL MAKE MY MONTHLY PAYMENT WITH THEM AND FIND ANOTHER COMPANY TO DO BUSINESS WITH...

In order to get through school, I had to take out various student loans because college is obviously not the most affordable thing in the world. My loans came through nelnet, and throughout the course of 4 years, I received so much confusing literature that I couldn't even begin to understand it. I would get paperwork on loan consolidation and how I needed to act "right away," but then I would call them and they would say that it was too soon and I didn't qualify for loan consolidation yet. Their customer service was anything but helpful and in the end, I consolidated my loans through another company -- happily. It seems that nobody at Nelnet can offer up a straight answer.
Customer service for this company is terrible. I found out today that I have lost my 1% interest rate reduction benefit because I was told that I was "all set" when I called to ask whether I needed to pay after having enrolled in automatic withdrawal. I do not see how someone could be so incompetent as to tell me that I was "all set" when it meant that I would lose my on-time payment status, or why the customer service rep I spoke with today thought it was my fault, unless they purposely make it difficult to get the benefit.
Further, his company no longer provides me with statements. I signed up for online statements and have not seen one in six months. I have written about this several times, and they are not responding. Perhaps I will have to make another phone call, but I do not believe it would get me anywhere.
These folks need to have a team meeting and figure out their companies policies and procedures. I have had hours of frustration with their representatives during the process of acquiring my student loan, and now with over a dozen phone calls, and filling out the same forms over and over attempting to make payment arrangements or deferment arrangements, my account is still in a state of dismay, and I still receive multiple threatening phone calls and letters every week...
