SLM (Sallie Mae)

Based in Reston, Va., Sallie Mae (originally Student Loan Marketing Association) is one of the largest student lenders in the United States. The company offers undergraduate and graduate student loans, as well as federal and private student-loan consolidation. The company also provides federally regulated Stafford and Parent PLUS loans. Formerly offered special tax treatment from the U.S. Government, the favored status was dropped in 1997.

Sallie Mae is clearly more interested in how long they can keep you in debt than any care about your academic goals. Their customer service is poor and they cut costs at every corner. I recommend Citibank.

They've changed a lot since I was in school, I reckon. They treated me fine and I always liked those paper coupon payment books. So quaint.
