They are HORRIBLE! 75% of my payment goes to interest and the interest changes every month . They have made mistakes several times with allocating my interest and principal. I did auto debit on checking to get decrease in interest of .25% and I am not positive i actually got reduction. Today I called and it said that they are having unuaully high call volume and the wait was from 47 to 57 minute wait time and i could leave my number and they would call me when it was my turn I thought no way .I have time to wait and put it on speaker phone and laid the phone down. No lie within 2 minutes they answered my call.
Why would they lie about that and they hoped that i would hang up and wait for them to call me back, Also when I call them it sounds like i am talking to people from India and i can not understand them. I wish i had never gotten a loan with them. The way they calculate interest I am going to be paying for these loans for the rest of my LiFE!!!!!!!
I wish I could rate them less than very poor. They are absolutely horrible. They get a government bailout, yet still treat their customers like ****. Maybe they wouldn't need the bailout (and to send out government into even more debt) if they would use good business practice, such as being polite to customers, offering options and being willing to work with their customers. I offered to pay them as much as I could per month, and they said I had to either pay the whole amount or else nothing at all, because I would still be charged the late fees. Why would I pay anything at all then? Also, they call about 10 times per day despite the fact that I answer and talk to them every time. Isn't this harrassment? I've asked to speak with managers, but they hang up on me mid-call. I have no idea what to do, but I feel like I'll be dealing with them my whole life! Also, with their interest rates, I will end up paying more in interest than I'll actually have borrowed (as in, I'll be paying back 45,000 in interest when I only borrowed 41,000...total of 86,000!). Finally, I tried to pay money one month to go on forebarence and they screwed up the paperwork somehow, and charged me a late fee, even though I arranged this ahead of time. Never ever ever ever ever do business with Sallie Mae.
I can't rate lower than very poor? That's a shame because Sallie Mae deserves it. I received a "quaint" paper coupon book stating my next payment is November 7th, which is correct since I had a forbearance for 3 months. I get online today to check my status like a good little borrower and find out I have $73 in late fees because I didn't pay for October when I was still in forbearance. My paper coupon says I owe around $300 but online my bill is over $500. By the way when I called for that forbearance I was charged the $27 over the phone fee 3 times for each month that I would receive forbearance. $27 a month to forbear? What other lender does that? I hope my consolidation goes through soon!
they suck period... seems like 50% of my payment to them goes to interest. THIS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL. This needs to be put to a stop!
A national disgrace.... This is legalized mafia. Those that attempt to make a better life and better serve the society we live in WILL be punished for a lifetime for trying. Better to take your credit and buy lavish toys and drink your life away...Cheat everyone... THIS you can recover from...try to better yourself and you can forget it. You will become a prisoner of the giant corporate machine..and you will never be able to recover from it.
When I was down and with out the rest of the money needed to begin college, Sallie Mae was there for me. Despite the opinions of others this is really a program that can help in the assistance of gathering money for school.
Just beware of the fine print and added interest rates applicable.
Sallie Mae is bar none the worst run business (financial institution or otherwise) with which I have ever dealt. Financial institutions should have some degree of record-keeping. I would expect, for example, Sallie Mae to know what loans they have issued me, whether any of these have (accidentally) been placed in default, the universities at which I have studied with the money they have leant me, etc. Even when speaking with professionals working at main branches in the US, one is dumbfounded by the abysmal record-keeping, the carelessness with which accounts are administered, and the general lack of knowledge about any non-standard sorts of higher education with which their company nevertheless has to deal. This company is an absolute disservice to students.
Sallie Mae is a scam. They lead young people into 10 of thousands of dollars of debt that you will not be able to pay off till you are in your 50's. Then if you have a situation in your life that make it hard to pay your bills, Sallie Mae makes it worse for you by harassing you and threatening you. Just remember...if you are trying to better your life avoid Sallie Mae like the plague. I went to college to get my BS, got it. Now I'm working in a job that a high school grad is doing also. All...I repeat...ALL my friend from college are all doing jobs that high school grads are doing. The only difference for us is 300 dollars of our monthly salary is blood promised to Sallie Mae.(Pretty much for the rest of our lives) None of us make over 43K. We are poor and Sallie Mae keeps us that way. Sallie Mae prays on youth. It's like this whole deal with the mortgages, only the borrowers in this case are 17, 18 and 19 year old kids that have no idea what they are getting themselves into. They just want to go to college. Please parent remember, your child doesn't have to graduate in 4 years. If it takes longer just to avoid Sallie Mae and student loan let them graduate in 5 or 6 years.
Sallie Mae ruins kids futures. And it targets middle class children. The rich pay for college in cash and bonds. The poor get government grants. But the middle class get screwed by Sallie Mae, into a life of debt and interest.
Run from Sallie Mae!
They don't offer consolidation any more. They exercise their option to deny loan consolidation with outside loan companies. Customer service is too often rude. I have been hung up on by service reps when I was still trying to get assistance. After some research, I've found many examples of others who've faced similar or worse experiences with Sallie Mae. I personally vow that once I've finished paying off my loan, I will NEVER do business with Sallie Mae ever again. I tell everyone I know to steer clear from them.
I had to go thru a whole process just to get to an American customer service rep. Once i did, then my issue was handled properly. I've called maybe about like 4 times in the past week about putting my loans back into deferment, and every time, i was told I need to have something faxed to Sallie Mae, but when i got the American, he said they had automatically received the info from my grad school, without me doing anything. Not to sound bigoted or intolerant, but the outsourced customer service center in India doesnt know jack. I have no idea why this is being outsourced in the first place.
