My husband and I have been insured with USAA for some 32 years. He was a career Naval Officer who retired and now works as a Federal employee, as do I. We have insured our cars, homes, and lives with them for many, many years. We have been fortunate in not having to file many claims over the years. We built our retirement home in 1999 and filed a claim in 2007 for a damaged roof because of hail and wind damage -- an act of God. Nearly all the homes in our neighborhood had to have the roofs replaced. We also filed claims in 2008 for water damage in our basement due to a leaking toilet and refrigerator. Well, because of these claims USAA just sent us notice that they would not renew our homeowners policy. We were shocked and devastated at the same time. We even have our home mortgage with their USAA FSB.
We are protesting their decision, but are also looking for another reputable insurance carrier to insure our home. USAA is an excellent company as long as you don't file any claims. A word to USAA members. Be careful about filing claims because you could end up being dropped. When I think of all the premiums we have paid over the years and never had to file a claim, and when we really had a need (the roof replacement was $12,000.00) they paid it and ultimately decided to drop us!

USAA overall is good, but I've gotten some annoying behavior as of late.
1. Recently I had my credit limit reduced to 1/5 of what it was. They sent a letter, but I already had a balance that was pushing the 1/5 limit. I had to do some moving around and quick paying to figure that out before my autodebits started being denied. I pay off the balance every month, have never had a balance and had been with them for about over 20 years so it was sort of annoying.
2. They no longer offer earthquake insurance for homes in the Puget Sound area (Seattle) so I can't get home insurance through them.
3. They blocked certain merchants from dealing with them due to high risk. I signed up for SiteGround and they blocked my card as a result. I had to call to free it because I was confused and tried to put the transaction through too many times. Then a few days later, I tried to use Paypal with my USAA credit card. That no longer will work either. They've effectively blocked Paypal because they require more information from paypal and the paypal interface can't handle that request. It just comes back as denied.
It's a shame because their airline rewards program is really good. $49 a year fee, but up to $500 ticket for 25,000 points.
So I'm feeling that I'm slowly being pushed out from using their services because they are changing their criteria. But if you fall within their confines, use them. They are probably going to be the last company in the US to fail due to some nautral disaster or financial difficulties.

I have heard numerous times how good of a insurance company USAA is, and from my experience, they are not a good insurance company, but the very best insurance, in all circumstances, I actually not only have the USAA car insurance, which I pay a mere 312 dollars every 6 months, but I also have a Credit Card that is very fair, and gave me a opportunity to pay the debt back in a timely manner!

My husband and I love USAA. We use it for everything imaginable - banking, credit cards, mortgage, car loans, motorcycle loan, insurance on everything imaginable, and we'd probably order our prescription drugs through USAA if they offered it.
Normally I'd encourage people to not put all their eggs in one basket, but seeing as how USAA is tied to the military, I think it's a bit safer than most.
Even if the rates aren't as good as other places (which I'm not sure of - they seem like good rates to us) the ability to tie everything in together and have one place to keep track of it all is well worth the extra percentage point.
Not only do they not tack on a bunch of extra fees, but they'll REFUND any ATM surcharges. That alone is enough to keep me there.
USAA customer service has always been very friendly and very helpful. I even went 2 states away to buy my car and they were able to help at 6pm on a Saturday with my loan and insurance.
I'm so glad my father was military (as was my husband) and I can use USAA. If it weren't for them I'd have probably gone crazy over banking options!

USAA is AWESOME!! I feel so bad I can't get my parents involved they ristrict their acess to military members and their family but their products and customer services is above anything I have ever used!! If I have a problem I know with one phone call it will get taken care of! I use them for all financal needs and insurance.
They are good, but like Costco and Amway, you need to comparison shop every couple of years. The prices on some insurance are great, but not all.
I can't say enough about USAA. I am constantly urging everyone I know to join (if they can, given the military or military family requirement). Their customer service is rated as the best in any industry year after year -- with good cause. From the ridiculously friendly customer service over the phone to the transparent finances and communication from the company throughout the year. I try to do everything I can through USAA and actually look forward to calling them. You get a great value to boot, I have found that their services are very competitively priced.
