I banked with WaMu for 9 years, 6 of which were just fine, no problems. However, the last 3 were nothing but a headache. The one free overdraft a year mentioned above is only for customers who open up a "New Free Checking Account" - not a "Free Checking Account," which is what I had. In order to upgrade my account, I had to go into a branch...the closest of which was 300 miles away. Their phone customer service is terrible; all the times I ever called I got nowhere with my issues.

When I went to a branch to close the account (while on a vacation, because there are no branches anywhere near where I live), I was asked why I was doing so. I replied, among a few other reasons, that I had unfairly been charged NSF fees. The person "helping" me insinuated that this was my fault for not keeping track of my account...he must have assumed that since I am young, I cannot balance a checkbook. He did refund one of the NSF fees as a courtesy.

Some people have had very good experiences with WaMu, and had I been asked 4 or 5 years ago, I would have agreed. However, upon moving to a city without a branch, my relationship with my bank went downhill. I closed my account on a very negative note. My parents closed their accounts as well after having similarly bad experiences.

Washington Mutual Personal Finance Rep is fraud. I opened a personal checking account with Darren (Personal Finance Rep) at the North Auburn, Washington Sub branch inside the Fred Meyer Store. I ordered a personal checking account only and made it clear to him that I would only need a checking account but when I received my ATM Card with my first bank transcript it noted that I had also opened a savings account as well. I was told by the bank that I signed up for it which means I signed paperwork for something I did not ask for in the beginning and was told different. To me this is fraud I do not recommend this Personal Finance Representative to anyone he is fraudulant.

Look, the only reason I signed up with the wamus was that they promised no hidden fees. So why did I spend every month trying to figure out where my money had gone?

Not to mention that customer service was a foreign concept to them, both in bank and on the phone. I'm glad I switched out of this place.

Washington Mutual has treated me very well as a customer. They process deposits more quickly than the local, smaller banks, which is very useful sometimes. I was able to set up online banking easily with them. However, in my area they have a slight tendency to understaff their branches, which slows down transactions that have to be done in person. One thing that I found very convenient was that if you upgrade to their premium-style account, you can get free money orders instead of paying a few dollars to turn money into a money order.

I like Washington Mutual. They give you a free pass on your first overdraft and they provide free money orders and cashier's checks to customers. If you want a free savings account, beware, you have to link to your checking account and set up a monthly transfer starting at $5 in order to avoid a minimum balance fee. Overall I like the bank, but the new layout with the tiny podiums all over the place is a little awkward.

Washington Mutual has always had top customer service. Any time I've gone into the branches or called them up, I've been treated with the utmost respect. I would also like to note, their free checking account is actually free with no real fees. For example, I did an international wire transfer to an Asian country, and the only charge was $9.50 taken out by another bank (they need an intermediary to send it). That is almost unheard of as I know most other banks charge $30 or $40 easy. However, with them being acquired and integrated into JPMorgan, I have to say that their products no longer have great interest rates (CDs or Online Savings accounts) and I would expect fees to pop up. However, their customer service still continues to excel and is still a great place to do business.

Both on the phone and in person, Washington Mutual has been an excellent free bank for me. Their variety of free products has been excellent for a college aged kid such as myself. There was an instance or two when I overdrafted accidentally, but had money in another account with them, and they immediately credited the overdraft fees to me with no problems. The additional benefits of free ATM usage (since I no longer live in a state with Washington Mutual), and their online access is top notch and a great value add. I am very pleased to say that I am a WAMU customer and plan to be for some time to come!

Washington Mutual has always taken care of me. There convenient, helpful, and always seem to make sure I'm taken care of. They never charge me with little fees, and provide the services I like, such as online banking, free atm use, many convenient atm locations, and of course, a smile when I walk in the door.

I actually found the Washington mutual info on this site and decided to go to their site and find out what they were offering. I was quite surprised to find you could open and be approved online. I set up my account and then had a month to deposit my five-dollar opening deposit. The great thing about the Washington Mutual account is all the perks they offer you. Free account, free checks for life, one free overdraft charge per year, and one hundred dollars in overdraft protection. A couple of days ago they sent a letter in the mail offering a hundred dollars to anyone who opens an account and deposits a hundred dollars in real cash. So far, my son has opened a new account and my husband is going to use the hundred-dollar voucher to open his new account. I highly recommend this deal, even if you currently have a checking account at another bank.
