travel8788,
Rental car insurance can seem very much like a sales pitch from rental car companies because it generally is. Rental car companies offer all sorts of coverage.
Insure.com (http://www.insure.com/car-insurance/rental-car-basics.html) has some decent coverage on the topic.
Chances are your own car insurance company offers coverage for rental car accidents, though it may be conditional so its best that you contact your car insurance company beforehand.
Apparently credit card companies also offer coverage when you charge the rental to the card; I recommend you contact them beforehand as well.
In the event that you don't have car insurance then you should probably purchase some form of coverage from the rental car company, regardless of how long you plan on having the car out. Though you may be the most defensive driver in the world, you can't account for vandalism or your rental car being hit while its parked.

Depending upon which state you live in, you may not have a choice. Check the laws of your state before you make any decisions because the choice in some states it has been made for you.
