Has anyone ever been burned after signing a lease that they didn't read thoroughly enough? I'm about to sign my first lease and want to know which sections deserve close attention.

Make sure you read the language about renewing the lease. It may say by what % they are entitled to raise your rent, and it may specify deadlines by when you need to them them know your plans.

Thanks for the tip. Luckily my landlord was willing to walk through the lease, line by line, with me. Seems like a straight forward guy who wouldn't try to scam me. Besides, most mistakes are made when new tenants rush through the paper work.

On a slightly different subject, I have a friend who is considering subleasing an apartment. Should they insist on signing a lease? Or, is the contract void because the sublet is illegal???
