Advice on Picking the Right Health Insurance
Sponsored by
It’s impossible to write a guide that tells you exactly what kind of health insurance to get. There are too many variables: how old you are, what your health is, if you have a family, your attitude about choice and cost–it’s never ending. That’s a decision you have to reach on your own.
But we can help you sort things out, understanding the good and bad about different plans. Armed with the information outlined in sections I and II, you can then go toe to toe with your company’s menu of choices when selecting the right healthcare for you, or, if you don’t have a company plan, what you should do for your own self.
And also keep this in mind: It’s the total cost that you’ll likely end up paying that counts, not what you pay each month to get the insurance.
Some people focus on just the deductible or the amount of coinsurance. A lot of people gloss over the premium, since that’s a relatively small amount of money that’s automatically deducted from their paycheck. But a $2,500 deductible, or 90% coinsurance vs 70 % coinsurance sounds like a much bigger deal, doesn’t it?
Well, it may be, or it may not. Take that high-deductible plan mentioned above: If you go to the doctor once a year, and that visit costs you $200, your total healthcare costs for the year are the doctor’s visit, plus your premiums for the year (which are, let’s say, around $600 annually). So you spent $800 on healthcare. Now, if you had gone with a PPO plan, you’d have only paid a $20 copay for the doctor visit, but your premiums would cost you $1600 a year.
Again, it’s not that one plan is materially better than another, but you have to look at all the angles. What’s more important to you? Overall cost? The ability to get some coverage wherever you choose to get care? How much hassle it takes to get things done? There’s no such thing as the perfect health insurance, but hopefully you can get pretty close.

Advice on Picking the Right Health Insurance:
The best advice on "Picking the Right Health Insurance" is to talk with a licensed health insurance agent that specializes in health insurance.
Take some time and think about this. If you choose to go at it alone, you could be in for all sorts of surprises if you're not 100% sure of what you're doing. Consider this too, would you try representing yourself in a court of law if you were charged with a felony? Use this same logic when it comes to using an insurance agent or not. The consequences could be bad if you choose to go it alone and you go to file a claim on something that isn't covered.
Realize that health insurance can be complicated and looking for the plan that is going to best fit your needs can be very stressful, so why put yourself through it? There are far too many variables to take into account, such as which health insurance plan is going to best your own (or family's) health insurance needs AND your health insurance budget.
