Problem: Your summer utility bills are burning a hole in your wallet.
Solution: Typically, 45% of your utility bill goes for heating and cooling, according to the Department of Energy. "If you do these three simple things, you can save some money this summer," says Chris Kielich, a spokeswoman for the agency. First, install a programmable thermostat and use it to automatically adjust your home's temperature while you're at work. "You can save around 10% a year on your air-conditioning and heating bills by adjusting your thermostat 10 to 15 degrees for only eight hours a day," Ms. Kielich says. Digital thermostats cost about $30 and are available at home-improvement stores. Second, install light-colored blinds on the windows and keep them pulled during the day. The light color reflects heat outside, keeping the cool air inside. Finally, check windows, doors, vents and outlets for energy leaks. Finding these leaks can be as simple as putting a candle up to a closed window to detect a draft. Seal the openings with caulk, insulation or weather stripping.
