Ask the following questions before buying a gift card from a bank or store:
What will the card buy?
Before you purchase a card, see what your gift will buy. The card will be of little use if the total won’t buy much at the store or online.
Are splits allowed?
See if the card can be used with another card to make purchases if the card’s balance isn’t sufficient.
What are the fees?
Many banks charge a fee to buy a card—but then deduct other charges during card ownership. Look for bank cards that don’t charge fees for at least an extended period.
What are the limits?
Ask stores or banks if there are age and purchase restrictions on the cards they issue.
What happens if a card is lost?
Some issuers require registration while others require your receipt before replacing it. Be sure to pass along this vital information to your little nephew.
