Questions to ask when comparing programs:

How safe if my data?
When considering a free web-based program, check the site’s frequently asked questions (FAQ) for its security measures or contact the site by email. A secure site will feature a closed yellow lock in the status bar at the bottom of your screen. Double-click on the lock for the status of its certification. If you’re still edgy, consider using the site for help with basic budgeting needs only.

Will this software program work on my computer?

Many programs only work on a PC. Make sure the program you’re buying is suitable to your computer.

Is this program compatible with my bank/brokerage?
Check with your bank/brokerage first to be sure their data update files can be integrated with the software you have in mind.

Exactly what services do you offer?
Make sure your needs are covered. For example, not all programs provide online banking or print checks.

Is professional advice included?
Some tax-prep programs offer pro assistance in different tax categories.

Is there live customer support?
Some companies will help you with software problems over the phone wile others manage snafus only by e-mail or live chat.

Does the tax software include federal and state returns?

Some charge extra for state software while others offer it for free with the purchase of a federal-return program.

How often do you have to pay?
Many companies sell their software programs for one price and then sell updates for less when the tax laws change and new features and upgrades are added. Ask companies about the cost of past upgrades so you have a sense of future costs.

Which edition is ideal?
Many money-management and tax-prep programs come in a confusing number of editions. Before you buy, call the company’s customer service line and ask about which one best suits your needs. This will prevent you from over-spending on tools you don’t need.
