A Qualified Tuition Program/ 529 Plan allows your contributions to grow tax-deferred. You can withdraw the funds free of income tax if you use them to pay for qualified education expenses, including books, fees and some living expenses. Federal and state income taxes and a 10% penalty apply to non-qualified withdrawals.
