Aetna offers a variety of dental products and programs including in- and out-of-network plans and Health funds, such as the Aetna DentalFund, that allows you to better control costs. For a low annual fee, Aetna also offers non-insurance discount dental programs such as Vital Savings by Aetna.
I have Vital Savings with Aetna. My dentist is fine but the savings are pretty minimal. When they say 15-50% savings, it seems to be 15% on everything. Other discount plans I've used are WAY better on the savings.
I live in CA and had Aetna's DMO. They were horrible. Each person in their customer service department had different answers... most of which turned out to be wrong. Their list of dentists was very short, and very few of those were taking new patients. The first one we went to said that I needed 3 crowns & a filling and refused to clean my teeth unless I got that work done first. I called my prior dentist who I had been seeing regularly until my insurance changed. He checked the teeth in question & said they had spots from having taken antiobiotics when I was a kid, but that nothing else was wrong with them. I sent his findings to Aetna, who allowed me to change dentists (I had to pay $120 for copies of the Xrays which the next dentist said were too blurry to use). That was 5 years ago, I've been seen by several other dentists since, and none of them have said anything was wrong with those teeth. Aetna left that dentist on their list for other unsuspecting souls to experience.
The next place we tried was OK - they had a cushy section for other insurance, and a generic section for us. The generic section dentist was honest, thorough, and competent. However, the office had some problems. My husband broke a tooth, and had to wait a month for an appointment. We were also overcharged by a few hundred dollars (Aetna did issue a refund to us after many, many complaints - The one I filed through my HR department finally did the trick). Then the dentist in the generic section was replaced by a greedy or incompetent dentist who said my husband needed 5 crowns, and that these would cost us $950 each out of our pocket (he said this was because we had to pay the entire difference of the cost of the material Aetna covered -which he refused to use- and the kind of material he liked to use. This dentist also did not understand terms in our explanation of benefits (like high-noble metal) which made us wonder if was really even a dentist! After months of trying to get information out of Aetna and filing a complaint against the dentist, we changed insurance plans. Guess what. The next dentist we went to said my husbands teeth were all fine. That was 3 years ago and he has still not needed any crowns. Meanwhile, that very scary dentist is still on Aetna's list of providers.
I was extremely disappointed in Aetna's failure to clear their list of the dentists whose actions showed they were either incompetent or dishonest. For this reason, please be careful if you have this plan. If you have never had bad teeth before, and your new dentist says you need a few thousand dollars worth of work, get a second opinion.
I just got on the Aetna dental plan through my employer and I have nothing but good things to say. The number of in-network dentists has made the plan easy and flexible, at a very manageable cost.
