This basic checking account is designed for students. The account provides free checking for five years, free online banking, and a free Visa check card. No minimum balance is required and the account provides a one-time refund for an "unexpected" service fee. With this account, it's OK to be young and dumb…once. You have to be at least 18 to sign up.
I opened a CampusEdge Checking Account in the middle of my college years. In the beginning it was a great account that fit all my needs. The ability to move money through all BOA accounts from one online interface was great and made managing my finances really easy. Also you can find a BOA ATM on almost every corner making it easy for me to get cash when I most needed it on the run.
However, towards the end of my time with BOA I noticed some suspect practices that ultimately lead to my decision to close all accounts with the company. Suddenly my charges were being held longer than usual and on an untimely schedule. Fees were being charged to my account prior to my incurring them. These unwarranted fees lead to overdraft, which lead to more fees and time on hold waiting for customer service to clear things up.
If I had not experienced the negative interactions with BOA in the last few months, the account would likely still be open.
I've had this type of account for a while, and have had no problems. The online banking features are easy to use, and the terms of the account are very reasonable. The lack of required minimum balance is also nice.
All in all, not bad. they did make sure that i was still a student after awhile. Only because I gave them a termination date of when I would be done with University. But if you give them a longer date, I dont think they check. Great bank, great people, especially if you are student. They reccomend a credit card, but I suggest not to. I once waited on a student loan check, and they waived the 10 day fee because they saw that I had this account. They were very good to me.
I have pretty much the most basic of services with my bank, but I am still very happy with their performance. I always keep my deposit receipts just in case, but I have never needed them. The staff is always very nice to me as well. The last time I was in the woman suggested that I change my address over so that my paychecks would clear faster. I decided to do so, and lo and behold they did. If not for the staff, I probably would still be waiting a day or so longer for my check to clear.
I opened a CampusEdge Checking account the summer before college, and have been pleased with it. Two coll features that are included with the account are, "stuff happens," which is a one-time fee-waiver, and "keep the change," which ties in directly with your savings account. Bank of America has an ATM on my college campus and many locations nearby, as well as at home, so it is easy to get money anytime. On-line banking is also very helpful--I can receive/send money to my parents in a jiffy.
I am very pleased with this account. I personally like how my Campus Edge Checking Account is connected with my Regular Savings Account through the Keep the Change program. I will give an example of how this program works. I spend $2.22 for a burger and fries. The remaining $0.78 to top off the dollar goes directly into my savings account. This top off of the dollar happens with every purchase. In addition, Bank of America doubles whatever is saved in Keep the Change at the year's end. Also, I love the online banking system that bank of america has. In my opinion, no other bank offers a more effective online banking system than BOA. Overall, I am greatly satisfied with all that Bank of America has to offer.
Be very careful if you're considering a Bank of America account. Their fee rates are higher than other banks should you miscalculate and they subscribe to a policy of maximizing the fees charged. For example, if you have 10 transactions in the $5 range and one in the $75 range with only $70 in your account, even if the $75 transaction takes place hours or in one case of a weekend, days, after the multiple $5 transactions; they will process the $75 transaction or the largest transaction first. They are open about this policy, you can find it in your account disclosures. This is not an account for students who overdraw their accounts occasionally (there's no shame in it, it happens to us all.)
I signed up for this account about a year and a half ago when I first entered college. I really like the online banking, which is easy to use and helps me manage my spending. There is a feature called Stuff Happens which is a one-time fee waiver. While I appreciated the one-time offer, I have had some other fee issues with the bank and have found that their fees seem to be unreasonably high. To prevent further overdrafts, I signed up for one of the online banking tools where I can get a text message sent to my phone if my balance dips below a certain amount, which is great.
CampusEdge offers a great way to start a checking account for college students who need a place to keep their money and won't charge them money to keep it there. Free checking accounts are now a mainstay with many banks, but there are advantages to having BofA's CampusEdge. The account gave a debit card that I could use anywhere, and with the added bonus of having my picture on the card as a way to show ID at school tuition offices. There is however, a caution that every student should take when using the card for purchases. Most students aren't exactly Donald Trump when they are in school and sometimes you charge things that you don't have money for. It is good training ground of course to make someone responsible for checking their balance and not getting an overdraft charge. Overdraft charges can range from $15-$35. If this card is meant for students who have enough to worry about in school then maybe the charge shouldn't go through in the first place. The embarrassment alone would be penalty enough for a student to start paying more attention to account balances. If you are broke and in school, working to pay for school, then maybe you know what it feels like when you have to worry about overdraft fees.
I recently was upgraded from a My Access Checking Account to a Campus Edge Account. I love it. No fees, no balance, for the next 4 yrs. And, I opened a new campus checking adn savings account with their online promotion, and will have those 2 accounts with the same features, FOR LIFE! NICE
