Regular Checking from Bank of America

This looks like one of the most basic checking accounts out there. It offers a free Bank of America Visa Check Card and unlimited check writing. Plus it allows you to manage your money online, by phone or via an ATM without paying a fee. Account maintenance fees average around $10 to $12 a month.

I used to work at Bank of America for 7 months...corporate just really isnt for me! But I learned all the ins and outs of bank fees and how to avoid them on the sly...yeah, so I thought! I had gone to the grocery store and coulve sworn I had enough in my account... guess I shouldve just swung by the ATM first., but I'd just gotten off work and wanted to just get home. Ended up overdrafting my account by like $40 at 6:30 that evening. I knew from working at that bank that if you put $80 in before it posts the next morning (usually before 9 am) the overdraft fee shouldn't post. I even asked the girl at the window who I had to shadow while working at the bank, and she even assured me that it shouldnt post, and if it did the bank manager would reverse the fee(s) for me. Each day another overdraft fee posted...$35 a pop!!! I'm so glad I can check my account online, because I was so nervous that it was going to post, and sure enough... 4 in total plus some crazy $20 maintenance fee for the FREE checking account. I went in to talk to her and she assured me that it WAS a bank error and all the overdraft fees, as well as the maintenance fee which I hadnt even brought up, would be reversed. She gave me a credit of $90... but now after 2 weeks of not being able to use my checking account (I'm not putting money back in til my balance is back in the positive where it should be!) I'm having to eat $70 for the 2 overdrafts she "can't reverse...its blocking that transaction with red flags"??? I don't care... I'll take all my money out of my savings, and then the next day go in and close BOTH accounts! This is ridiculous... I was told it was a bank error!

Bank of America is godawful and it just got worse. Everyone has problems and in some cases, these problems are not the customers fault. Sometimes direct deposits do not post on time, retailers take dayse, sometimes weeks to process payments, etc., etc., But no matter who's fault it is, BofA will cahrge you a $35 NSF fee on top of another $35 continuous overdraft fee. They purposely put payments through before credits to charge overdraft fees and they don't care if you had money in your account to cover charges at the time the card is swiped. The money will be taken out of your account the same day (meaning your balance will reflect the charge) but it will actually post several days later -- if your account is overdrawn for any reason, it's your fault and they will cahrge you an OD as if you swiped your card and no money was in your account at the time of purchase. They couldn't care less if the date of purchase and your balance that day prove that there was money in the acocunt to cover it. Simply put, BofA is a bank that I would consider predatory. They prey on people with little money and they do whatever they can to collect ridiculous fees and continue to collect fees when its obvious you don't have the extra money for it. They just don't care. How can you get out of the "hole" if they just keep adding fees? Stay away from BofA. They are unreasonable, predatory, and they do not deserve your business.

It is one of the better checking accounts around. I have found that your credits will get posted before debits if they hit the same day which can save you from being hit with a overdraft fee. They also limit the overdraft charges to 10 a day which in these economic times is an added blessing.

Their "Keep the Change" program is nice, especially if you want to put money away for a rainy day. It rounds up each transaction and places the difference into your savings account.

As far as basic "regular' checking accounts go, this is a good one. What I find sets it apart is the online capabilities. BOA is far ahead of its peers in this area. I maintain accounts with multiple banks and BOA is the only one I do all my electronic banking and payments with due to the depth of its capabilities and reliability. The fees can be high if you don't pay attention so watch that, otherwise a great basic checking account.

It is a good checking account for the average person that wants to just have a place to store money and have easy access anywhere they go in the united states. I don't pay maintainance fees luckily due to the fact that I got my account during a promotion. The customer service reps arent the brightest most of time so dont expect an einstein on the phone, if you need assistance. Their fraud protection isn't the greatest either, I lost a bundle of hard earned cash on that one. Who can I blame but myself tho, I noticed Wells had a little bit better security before I made the switch. The savings is actually worth it to me, just be smart.

This is a decent checking account at best. I'm a long time customer with Bank of America, and I switched to another type of account due to the fees associated with regular checking. The days of costly checking are over because of competition in the financial marketplace, yet I cannot complain about their overall customer service. Although expensive, there are other alternatives that you can find that would perhaps better suit your needs.

I would choose a different bank. Bank of America's customer service is horrible, and they like giving you the run-around. I tried to open an account with them, and they left a message on my answering machine that they needed to verify my address. When I called them back, they said everything was fine. A few days later, I found out that they had closed my account because they were unable to reach me. I'm worried now that this will adversely affect my credit rating.

I'd strongly recommend against Bank of America. I left them a few years ago for WaMu because BOA had no respect for my money! They'd put pointless overdraft fees on, failed to deposit checks before cashing personal checks (in order to charge OD fees) and failed to transfer money out of my savings to checking for 4 solid days, so they could charge overdraft fees! Stay away from them.

I love doing my day-to-day banking w/ Bank of America. I have the basic checking account, some of the fees can be a bit ridiculous but all and all they are reasonable. What I like best about BOA is their online account management services are the absolute best and if even just for that I'll never leave..

I was happy with Bank of America until I hit hard times. I fell below 0 a few times and accumulated fees. The fees kept increasing and made it hard to keep my balance up. I switched to a credit union with free checking and lower fees and have not had a problem since.
