Carefirst offers several dental insurance options including CareFirst BlueChoice Discount Dental Program, DHMO Dental, Maryland Preferred Dental, Regional Preferred Dental, Regional Traditional Indemnity Dental, Traditional Indemnity Dental, and Traditional Indemnity Dental.
I have had CareFirst (BlueChoice) for a year 1/2 now and I really would NOT recommend them. As for dental, there is only ONE provider in my area (I even checked the counties located above and below my area). The info on their website is from 2005 and we are now in 2009! I found similar issues with the health ins. part of my plan, website info is extremely out of date, especially the provider list. They do warn you to call first and make sure the doctor listed is still with them and taking new patient. The first 11 doctors I called on their list of providers were all a "no go". I also feel this company is behind the times, they have a website, but you cannot make your monthly payments online, nor can you pay by phone! The ONLY way to pay is by mailing a check and hope it doesn't get lost in the mail. Also word of caution, they have upped my rate THREE times in about a 9 month period, with no reason given other than that they "reserve the right to" do so.. Three increase in less than a year is excessive, my Mother-in-Law has worked for years in medical insurance billing and she said that is ridiculous and I should drop them. On a positive note, ever time I have needed to call them, the people I have spoke with have always been friendly. But the plan itself.. not so good.
I have this dental insurance and i have no complaints. There are plenty of in-network dentists that are convenient for me and the pricing is fair to the market.
It sucks, they say that every person on dental plan has a minimum coverage of $1500. I Took my son to one of the dentists online and ended up getting the letter that they are not paying for anything. They said the doctor is no longer participating with them! (even though its on thier website!!!) They suck at handling such claims. That was the first and last time i ever used thier insurance! I wouldn't recommend it at all, i mean why would i have the insurance and pay them each month when I have to pay for the whole bill from my pocket!
