E*Trade’s Complete Savings account offers 3.01% APY (1/5/09) with no minimum balance and no account fees. Transfers to and from any institution are free, up to $100,000 per day. Account may be opened with a $1 minimum deposit.
In an old-fashioned run on the bank, depositors would actually run away from the bank. Yet, in this new-fangled world of online savings accounts, bailouts and fast money, depositors have reason to go back.
Fresh off a management change and a $2.5 billion private equity investment to stem losses from bad loans, E*Trade needs to drum up some new depositors and fast.
Put in any amount, and, with no minimums and no fees, your cash will feel a whole lot better. But, you're tempting fate if you fund the account with more than $100,000. Witness Netbank.
Either way, E*Trade is trying to stay above the market at 6x the national average. And, hey, you don't have to trade there to bank there.
i liked etrade for the brokerage account. fees are more expensive than ing . i only pay 4 bucks, when i was paying 12.95 with etrade. by the time they transfer money from an external account, literally it will take them at least 12 days ! ok customer service, good and bad stories ! Savings acount rate, opened with 2.00% APR, and now slashed 50% less !

I opened this account about 6 months ago, and have had no problems. I got a great rate. But I do have one complaint. The fact that the delay as mentioned before in a different review, it really gets annoying after a while. But other then that, no complaints.
I opened an E Trade account about six months ago when they had a deal that you could open an account for $1 and get a $25 bonus for opening it. As of yet I have never received the sign up bonus. However the account is very easy to use.
I have a savings, brokerage, and IRA account with E-Trade. Although I could do similar features with my own bank, I liked the ability to do everything online.
I like having my savings account where it takes a little longer to get the money than if it were at my own bank. Why? It's a savings account, not my bailout money. When I need to spend it I will know ahead of time.
I also like the high APY on it. Definitely beats most banks on that.
I put some money into a CD at E-Trade because they were offering really competitive rates a couple of years ago. I had a jumbo certificate - $100,000. When it came due, I needed the money, but they were extremely rude and difficult when it came to getting a check cut. Although I answered every security question they asked, they still said I needed to fax a notarized affidavit to them in order to get my money out. This was the first time I've ever been asked to do this. My mother-in-law had similar problems and I have not used them since. Although their rates may look good, make sure you know the terms and understand the requirements to get your money out. I felt like they were holding my money hostage.
I opened an account when the rate was so much higher than everyone else. I have never been charged a monthly fee, maybe because of my brokerage acct. I am glad this is FDIC covered, as their stock is down under a dollar, and am nervous about their future.
I just opened this account a month ago and have had a great experience with it so far. Anyway you spin it 3.3% is an excellent rate that allows for more noticeable and substantial gains than most savings accounts out there. It is very easy to sign up for and with no fees of any kind you can't go wrong.
Etrade is just okay. The issue I have with Etrade is the delay from the time you initiate an online money transfer until the time it actually hits your account. When asked about this issue, Etrade actually blames the clearing firm. Overall, it's convenient.
I signed up for the E*Trade max-rate checking account through this link. It provides unlimited ATM fee reimbursements and unlimited online bill payments. However, if you want the maximum interest rate and waiver of the monthly fee ($15), you have to maintain a balance of $5,000 or more. If you don't have that much, you're better off going with the savings account, which offers a slightly lower rate, but no fees and no minimum balance.
As for the account set-up, it was easy at first to apply and get my first $100 transfer accomplished. But then I must've done something wrong, because I couldn't see my account online, and I had to call customer service. Their only solution for me was to re-enroll for online access to the account (huh?) even though I'd signed up for it online in the first place. I had to use a new username and re-enter my existing bank account information. A bit of a pain for an online-centric account! I hope further customer service and online interface issues are a bit better.
