For balances over $5,000, Max-Rate Checking earned 3.01% APY (8/18/08) and had no fees. The account offers free bill pay and unlimited ATM refunds. The account will be charged $15 per month in which the average balance falls below $5,000. The fee can be avoided by maintaining a monthly direct deposit of $200 or more, have at least $50,000 in all E*Trade accounts or make at least 30 stock trades per quarter.

This is a very high interest checking account, but it's hard for the average person to maintain a balance of $5,000. If your balance goes below $5,000, not only are you not going to get the 3.25% interest (it goes down to 0.5%), you also get a monthly charge of $15. The unlimited ATM refunds is key, since there obviously aren't any E*Trade ATMs to be had. The account also has online bill pay and automatic free transfers.
