The first step is to fill out an application for Federal Student Aid, which determines what kind of aid you may be eligible to receive.

I was able to get a great student loan from M&I bank with a low interest rate, and a very manageable payment schedule, once I graduated. I have been out of school now for 6 months and i still have another 7 months until my first payment is due. I also don't get penalized for paying large sums up front!
