401k Plan from Nationwide

A Nationwide 401k Plan gives you a great tax-advantaged way to save for retirement, most commonly if you're an employee of a private company. Most employers match your individual contributions, and by making contributions you get the chance to grow your account as the market goes up. Contributions are taken directly out of your paycheck.

I can give Nationwide a 1 only because there is not a 0 listed. My employer changed 401k companies and Nationwide stole $6000 from my account because it was in the fixed income fund. Others in my company experienced the same theft.

I have had my 401(k) with Nationwide since I started at my company at 19. Nationwide products can be sold through brokers or directly to plan sponsors. My company provides a match and profit sharings, as well as loans. I have found Nationwide very easy to deal with, with good investment options, and great online tools. While I know fees can be an issues, a 401(k) participant will always pay fees. One can never get something for nothing. I am a believer though, that you get what you pay for: Good customer service, features, and good investment options.

Nationwide is primarily an insurance company. I don't have any direct experience with their 401k plans - but many people think you should be careful of extra fees and lesser quality products when using an insurance company for retirement plan services. "Bogleheads" is an online discussion forum that's mostly focused on Vanguard products. But users did have one discussion about Nationwide's 401k services that you can read here: http://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21321&mrr=1217524420

I believe an important factor in choosing a 401k plan is having a diverse product set based on your risk profile as determined by a trusted financial advisor.
