USAA's Checking services are great! All of the supplies needed are provided, and they more than compensate for their lack of physical branches with their great online services, friendly phone staff, and quick mail-in check depositing.

USAA has the best accounts for people who are eligible.

USAA refunds ATM fees each month, and if we use the card as a credit card instead of a debit card we get cash back.

The online account tools are simply awesome as well - the best online banking interface I've ever seen.

To deposit money into the account can take a few days because there's not a local branch, but automatic deposit of our paychecks really makes it a non-issue. I know they also recently did some kind of deal with UPS to allow faster deposits by going to UPS stores, but I haven't used this feature yet (and that may not have been the correct place).

To echo the other reviewers, USAA is the best financial institution I have ever held a checking account with. I started out with just a savings and, as I got older, they helped me transition into a checking account as well. Their customer service is top notch, the online banking is very easy to use and navigate, they reiburse your ATM fees and you can even make deposits right from your home computer if you have a scanner. If not, their mail system is great and I have never had a problem. They provide the envelopes, with postage, to mail deposits, so it is very easy. A lot of banks charge for checkes but USAA offers free checkbooks if you just get the standard book - custom checks are all they charge for. I can't say enough about the customer service - if you or a familiy member are in the military, I highly recommend checking out USAA's checking account.

USAA is a great bank and consistently gets high/highest ratings of any bank/insurance company in a number of areas such as Products, Fees, Customer Service, etc. With that being said, they are only available to eligible people -- they started as a bank serving the military. You may be eligible if you were in the military or if your parents were/are USAA members. Also, they are based in San Antonio, TX and do not have "branches" so for most people this would be almost like an "internet" bank. This may be a change for some people. I have been a member for over 18 years and have used them exclusively as my bank for 10 years (i.e. everything done via phone, internet, fax, mail, not in person). If interested check out revised eligibility requirements at www.usaa.com

I have been using USAA's checking for years. It is great. They pay interest checking, offer cash back on debit card purchases, rebate ATM fees charged by other institutions. They also have a nifty feature that allows you to deposit checks from home with your scanner, which takes a lot of the hassle out of using an internet based bank. USAA's customer service has always been excellent, every time I call they are on the line quickly, they are curteous and they answer my question or solve the problem without arguing.
