Open only to USAA members - current and former U.S. military families, USAA provides several levels of brokerage accounts. From a simple cash account to an asset management account with check writing and bill pay, USAA brokerage accounts feature stock trades as low as $5.95 as well as access to USAA Mutual Funds, bonds and options.
USAA is great when it comes to insurance but cannot compete when it comes to brokerage services. I made the mistake of opening my IRA with USAA instead of with TD Ameritrade and have been frustrated with USAA's services from day one. My regular trading account is with TD Ameritrade and I love their platform... especially with the addition of thinkorswin. USAA does not have a platform that can compare and the fees are not as competative.
If you like to trade anything other than mutual funds, I recommend chosing TD Ameritrade or Interactive Brokers.
USAA brokerage service is overpriced. Better brokerages that offer more services at lower prices. BoA and Wells Fargo offer free trading if you have $25,000 total in a combination of accounts (CDs, checking, savings, IRA, etc).
