I tied in reviewing this checking account. I've never had another checking account, but I know it must get better than this. The fees that are charged and the warnings I receive for small issues are awful. Thirty-five dollars for an overdraft, when I was led to believe that my checking and savings accounts were linked was base theft in my mind. I thought that safety precaution was in place for emergencies, and that occasion was just that. They labeled it as a "transfer fee". I will be switching shortly to a more convenient bank in any case.
I agree. Wachovia is really good at charging HIGH fees. They put your purchases on hold for several days before removing the funds from your account so balance your checkbook CAREFULLY. I've lost so much money dealing with this checking account.
I have been with Wachovia ever since I got my first checking account. However, I am about ready to close my free student checking account. I am a young adult struggling to pay rent while working through school, and on several occasions I have paid Wachovia hundreds of dollars in "miscellaneous" fees. The good thing about the account is taht there is no minimum balance; the bad thing is that they do everything in their power to make sure you overdraft. I would not recommend the free student checking account to anyone who did not have very, very stable income (ironically, usually not students.) On the bright side, the Wachovia staff are always very helpful and friendly, and sometimes they are willing to refund their ridiculous fees.
They make it sound so simple and easy. However watch out for the overdraft fees. I got so screwed with this that I ended up losing $400 in one day. Once you overdraft, for any purchase after that, they bill you a $35 fee. They make no effort to notify you that you are in overdraft so you may go for days making purchases which could add up to hundreds of dollars in fees. It's sly, sneaky, and completely against what a student account should be.
