I believe that if you've given your child opportunities all along to be responsible that they will know and want to move out when they think it's right for them. Besides, you learn from failing to be more successful so I am not afraid that they will fail because my kids will know they will always have a nest to come home to if things don't work out. The whole purpose of raising them is to let them go and make their way.

For kids: At what age do you expect to move out of your parents house?

Age has nothing to do with the kids moving out for us. If one of the kids move out before they are mentally, emotionally, and financially ready, we will have a long term resident in the 'guest room' while we find a way to help the young adult re-cooperate and get back on their feet and actually be prepared to move out. My children are welcome to stay as long as they'd like with the knowledge that its not free ride. Everyone participates and contributes to the household.

I think that kids are staying with their parents for longer these days because the school system and society in general isn't placing the rigorous demands and expectations on kids the way it use to.

The sheer responsibility factor isn't there for everyone. Many are fine, but I think this contributes to it.

If they are going to college - they can stay till they are finished. If they have jobs, get an apartment.

I personally believe the kids are not fully prepared to move out between ages 18 to 21. They may think they ready to prove themselves out in the real world, but not with much success. I think that ages 22 to 24, they have grown strong wings and can and will have a much higher success ratio.
