Another Reason to Hate Gift Cards

We already gave you seven good reasons why gift cards make for rude gifts. Here's another one for you: If the retailer you have a gift card with goes bankrupt, you're screwed.
Look at what happened with Sharper Image's gift cards. After the company declared bankruptcy, it announced it would only honor gift cards if the consumer spent twice the dollar amount on the card. Now these gift card holders are battling it out as a crew in court.
Consumer groups are also working to help out the gift card holders in need. They've petitioned the Federal Trade Commission to put some pressure on bankruptcy court proceedings — even though the FTC legally can't force companies to do anything.
Sounds like these gift cards came specially wrapped in a headache.
What's the point here? Like Ron wrote before, you shouldn't care about handing over cash instead of a gift card — because no one really wants gift cards. And if you can spare the time, why not make your cash gift personal? Bust out the markers and colored pencils and design an envelope for your cash. And that'll make your gift a hundred times better than a stupid gift card.
