The Short Story
This is the third installment in our series of rental horror stories. Read the first one here.
A woman living in Silver Spring, MD, returned home to discover the door to her apartment wide open. Fearing a break-in, she went downstairs to the lobby and returned with a security guard. Fortunately, it turned out the culprit was someone on the maintenance staff who didn’t close the door after entering the apartment to perform a repair.
What To Do?
- Lapses like this should be uncommon, but be sure to raise the concern with your property manager so they are aware of what happened.
- Request to have future maintenance scheduled at times when you will be at home.
- Protect yourself with renters insurance, which will cover damages in the event that your home is vandalized or your property is stolen.
