The Short Story

This is the final installment in our series of rental horror stories. Read the first one here.

A roommate who eats your day-old pasta from the fridge isn’t so bad, compared to one who gobbles up your identity. What could be scarier than a roommate with a dastardly combination of ill intentions and access to your personal and financial information? Even if you’ve found a roommate through a personal referral and made best efforts to check their background, it’s wise to err on the side of caution.

What To Do?

  • Always password-protect your computer and your email.
  • Keep personal and financial information in a locked file drawer or security box.
  • Don’t disclose personal or financial information (such as your social security number, bank account information, and credit card numbers) in phone conversations that might be overheard.

More Resources:

Rent.com is the nation’s #1 Internet listing site (ILS) in the rental housing industry enabling renters to find a residential rental property online using a free robust search tool. Rent.com has the most online traffic and the largest inventory of contracted property listings. As the only national ILS with a pay per lease business model, Rent.com allows property managers to cost-effectively fill their vacancies.
