401ks are retirement savings accounts established by employers, largely corporations, where employees elect to contribute a percentage of their salary. Those contributions are automatically deducted from your paycheck, before you've paid any income taxes. Employers might also make contributions on behalf of their workers, usually to match employee contributions, but sometimes whether workers put any of their own money in or not. The money is held in a personal account, which the owner can place in mutual funds and other investments that employees choose from the plan's menu. Everything inside the 401k grows tax-free; account owners pay income taxes on contributions and earnings once they take the money out in retirement.
