On Jul 23, 2008 Erin reviewed Free Checking with Direct Deposit from Chase
Chase is a great checking account for New Yorkers. It has the most ATM branches in Manhattan, and ATM machines in every Duane Reade (which basically doubles its footprint). This is great because if you don't travel much outside of the city, you never have a reason to pay the $2 non-Chase ATM fee. However, if you do travel occasionally, it can be pretty hard to find a Chase branch, and those …$2 charges add up (especially in addition to the $2 fee that the other bank usually charges as well).
Chase has an ok online interface, and now I pay all my bills online, and most of them through automatic bill-pay. However, be wary of Chase's hidden charges - I got charged two months in a row for downloading my data to Wesabe - even after I had cancelled the service. Saying that it takes 30 days for cancellations to take effect is just their way of screwing you out of another $9.95. No thanks!
Also, they don't pay any interest, so if you have a higher balance, you should probably look for a checking account with interest. But for a no-frills convenience in NYC, it can't be beat.

On Jul 15, 2008 Erin reviewed SmartyPig
I really like the concept of SmartyPig and of course, the super high interest rate they offer. I'm getting 3.9%, which is better than most savings accounts out there. It's a great place to put away money for a rainy day. And as of July 15, 2008, they've finally added the option of being able to transfer your money for free back to your own checking account once you've completed your savings …goal. This is the one thing that kept me from rating it a 5 and now they've added the option!

On Jul 15, 2008 Erin reviewed Max-Rate Checking from E*Trade
This is a very high interest checking account, but it's hard for the average person to maintain a balance of $5,000. If your balance goes below $5,000, not only are you not going to get the 3.25% interest (it goes down to 0.5%), you also get a monthly charge of $15. The unlimited ATM refunds is key, since there obviously aren't any E*Trade ATMs to be had. The account also has online bill pay… and automatic free transfers.
