I worked in investment banking for Robertson Stephens and investment consulting at Cambridge Associates before attending Stanford's journalism school and landing at FiLife.

While at Cambridge Associates, I got my asset allocation religion, helping construct investment portfolios for families with lots of money plus a variety of endowment funds. My clients included the Smithsonian, the United States Tennis Association, the Whitney Museum of American Art and my alma mater Williams College. I helped manage their asset allocations and select investment managers, among other things.

On Aug 19, 2008 Kristen reviewed 401k from Vanguard

My previous employer, Cambridge Associates, used Vanguard for its 401k plan. Cambridge Associates is an investment consulting company that helps many of the country's most important non-profits (think big hospitals, museums, ivy league schools) and wealthiest families manage their money. It's Cambridge's job to pick good managers - and Cambridge picked Vanguard for its own retirement funds.

Why?

Most importantly: Vanguard offers a wide selection of low-cost funds.

Also: I found Vanguard's website and customer service to be superb.

Though I no longer keep my 401k with Vanguard - I do keep an IRA and Roth IRA there. I'm a fan. Investors who are a lot smarter than me are also fans.

On Aug 12, 2008 Kristen reviewed Auto Insurance from AllState

My family has always used AllState. I have to admit that I liked fast cars during my teenage years (OK, and maybe in my twenties too) which lead to a few conversations with our AllState rep. Then, and more recently, I've found their customer service to be great. Our rep answered questions thoughtfully, was nice and friendly, and returned calls promptly.

On Aug 10, 2008 Kristen reviewed 401k Plan from Nationwide

Nationwide is primarily an insurance company. I don't have any direct experience with their 401k plans - but many people think you should be careful of extra fees and lesser quality products when using an insurance company for retirement plan services. "Bogleheads" is an online discussion forum that's mostly focused on Vanguard products. But users did have one discussion about Nationwide's 401k services that you can read here: http://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21321&mrr=1217524420
