On Nov 6, 2008 jeremy reviewed Premium Savings from Wachovia Bank

Compared to other free, high-yield savings accounts available (with much higher interest rates), the features on Wachovia's savings accounts are pretty lackluster. The main benefit is integration with Wachovia's checking accounts through their website.

On Oct 10, 2008 jeremy reviewed Blue Cash Credit Card from American Express

Once you unlock the full reward tier for this card (after sufficient annual spending), the rate of return is excellent.

I typically use this in tandem with a MC/Visa rewards card (for places where Amex isn't accepted). There are quite a few that offer comparable reward rates to Blue Cash all year round, but with annual caps.

A word of advice: If possible, pick up a non-tiered reward Visa/Mastercard that offers similar rewards to Blue Cash all year round (e.g. 5% on groceries, gas, etc.). Put any non-special spending towards the Blue Cash to unlock its full reward rates, while enjoying 5% on gas/everyday spending with the Visa/MC. Once you clear $6500 in general spending on the Amex, put the Visa/MC in the back of your wallet and enjoy Blue Cash's uncapped rewards thereafter. This works out well, as the difference in rewards for Blue Cash on non-special spending is a mere 1%, while you stand to miss out on 4% for gas/everyday purchases. This works even better if you can plan ahead to make a big purchase or two during the first few months of your annual cycle with Blue Cash (to unlock that full 5% rate ASAP).

On Oct 10, 2008 jeremy reviewed Free Checking from Wachovia Bank

I've done my checking with Wachovia for several years now (formerly a Crown Checking account and now free checking). Their web interface for managing your savings and checking accounts is quite nice, and integrates nicely with BillPay and investments (if you had an IRA or stock portfolio through Wachovia).

As far as I know, free checking entails no account fees, but you do have to purchase your own checks I didn't mind, as the checks from my original Crown Checking account were still usable. When the time comes to purchase new checks, I'll likely do so through Costco or a third-party, as Wachovia's checkbook prices are a tad high.

A huge plus for this product is Wachovia's online BillPay application. It's not just useful for paying utility and credit card bills with registered businesses. BillPay works great for mailing a check to anyone (friends, landlord, etc.) for free - Wachovia even covers the postage costs.

Perhaps one of the only negatives that comes to mind is the nonexistent interest rate, which doesn't stack up well against other banks that are offering free high-yield checking accounts.
